Blog 12: Consequentialism

The Gone, Baby, Gone is a film about the kidnapping. In the film, little girl Amanda was kidnapped by the captain to give her a better life because Captan own daughter was killed. Amanda's mother was a drug addict, horrible Mother. Patrick finally found Amanda in captan's house and decides to call the police and give Amanda back to her mother. But his girlfriend wants to keep Amanda with captan, because she will have a better life. His argument that he could not live with himself knowing that the girl was taken from her mother, even if she may have a better life, one day she might grow up and wish she knew her mother. It's basically a principle with him that he can absolutely never bend, even if it means that Amanda will eventually be worse, living with his mother.Giving the girl back to the mother was the right thing. Even if she would have had a better life with the police chief, who gets to judge parenting ability. The right thing to do is not always the easiest.

  1. This is a paragraph which only summarizes Gone Baby Gone. But you are missing the most important points in this short essay. You mentioned the characters, but didn’t mention which character followed consequentialism or ethical absolutism. I suggest you write another paragraph stating what you think Patrick’s ethics follow, since you agree with the actions he made with Amanda. Mention Captain Doyle and Patrick’s girlfriend, Angie, since you mention them in this paragraph. A third paragraph should be added as well, stating if the movie takes sides in these two ethical views. Does the movie show more ethical absolutism or consequentialism?
